Building Rules

Many New York buildings require a certificate of insurance, a booked freight elevator, and a set move window. Ask your management office for its rules as soon as you sign.

Street Parking

Curb space is scarce, so delivery time and truck position matter more than in DC. Tell us about loading zones, hydrants, or bike lanes out front.

Walk-Ups

Many older buildings have no elevator at all. Count the flights and measure the stair turns so large pieces can be taken apart ahead of time.

Getting the Truck Out of DC

DC parking is the first thing to solve. The District’s transportation agency issues Emergency No Parking signs for moving trucks through its TOPS permit system. By law, the signs go up 72 hours ahead at non-metered spaces and 24 hours ahead at meters, and a residential moving truck permit covers up to 2 days. Apply early so the posting window fits your moving date.

The New York State DMV says new residents must get a New York driver license within 30 days. Vehicles registered in New York need New York insurance, and out-of-state coverage is not accepted.
